There are so many people who have children who have experienced brain injuries and feel totally helpless because people will not answers their questions.
I have a section on my website http://www.livingwithmynewbrain.com/ under the Answers Tab where I have tried to answer questions from the brain injured point of view.
I would ask that people share their stories on this blog so that people can see that there are some things that are similar with all brain injuries and that recovery is possible but it takes time.
If you have a story to tell please post it here.
Looks like I am going to be first with a comment. Pretty hard to compress 19 years into a few paragraphs but here goes.
ReplyDeleteSunday August 18 1991 @ 4 pm (we don't forget those dates do we?) was the time my life and all those connected with me changed forever. It was the day the police officer called the house telling us of our daughter Helen's car accident, that it was serious and that she was being air-lifted to Sunnybook Hospital in Toronto. We visited her daily there as she lay in her coma for 4 months until December. She finally woke up and we were lucky to be able to bring her home for a few days, she stayed in our living room in a hospital bed. After that she returned to hospital, then back to the local hospital and eventually West park for rehab. She returned home almost 2 years later, in a wheel-chair, had great difficulty with her speech, reading and writing.
Now she walks for miles, speaks well and can write reasonably well.
There is lots more to tell, but this is a start. There is no Hollywood happy ending with brain injury since it is on ongoing condition. However I am very thankful that Helen is still with us and that she has come back so far and continues to improve after all this time.
Major issues now are her social isolation which we were warned would happen, and of course her future life, when her family can no longer care for her.
